Ali's Story
Ali's Story
A Lifetime of Teaching, Learning, and Seeding Curiosity
Education has been a lifelong journey for Ali, one that didn't end when she retired from public school teaching after 35 years. Her curiosity about how children learn, her willingness to question conventional educational practices, and her commitment to exploring new ideas continue to shape her philosophy today.
A retired New York State educator, Ali holds four public school certifications in elementary education (Nursery, Kindergarten, and Grades 1–6), special education (K–12), school guidance counseling (K–12), and educational technology.
Her career included classroom teaching in first, second, and fourth grades, special education, and 16 years as a mathematics coordinator working with children from kindergarten through sixth grade.
Throughout her career, Ali worked with children across a broad range of abilities, interests, and educational needs. Her experiences included individualized instruction, collaborative and cooperative learning, multisensory approaches, curriculum development, and hands-on educational experiences.
An Educator Who Never Stopped Learning
Ali's professional education continued throughout nearly every year of her 35-year teaching career. Beyond her degrees and certifications, she pursued numerous courses, professional development opportunities, and studies of different educational philosophies.
Early in her career, she explored British education through two summer experiences that included time in schools and educational studies at Oxford and the University of London.
She also studied discrete mathematics for K–12 teachers at Rutgers University, bringing mathematical investigations and activities back to her students. Working with two other master teachers, she collaborated in team-teaching experiences that expanded opportunities for children to explore mathematical concepts.
During her 16 years as a mathematics coordinator, Ali participated in revising her school district's mathematics curriculum, adapting and incorporating activities and games aligned with New York State requirements. She also provided professional development for teachers in activity-based mathematics instruction.
Her additional experiences included introducing educators to the Slingerland Multisensory Approach through BOCES-sponsored superintendent's conference programs, providing professional development in educational technology, conducting mathematics enrichment workshops for middle-grade students, and counseling alternative high school students during her counseling certification internship.
Over the years, Ali explored a wide variety of educational philosophies, instructional methods, and alternative approaches to schooling. Her experiences as both teacher and student continually challenged and expanded her understanding of education.
And she continues reading, questioning, and learning today.
An Evolving Philosophy of Education
Throughout her career, Ali came to recognize that no two children experience learning in precisely the same way.
Children bring different interests, experiences, abilities, and perspectives to everything they encounter. They develop at different rates, make connections in different ways, and often discover understanding through experiences that cannot be neatly prescribed or measured.
Her years in education also led her to question the expectation that children should fit into predetermined curricula, developmental timelines, and standardized definitions of achievement.
She came to recognize that when children struggle, the difficulty may lie not in their ability to learn, but in educational approaches that fail to recognize and accommodate their individual needs.
She also came to believe that opportunities for enrichment, investigation, creativity, and intellectual challenge should be available to all children, not simply those identified as gifted. Every child has interests, abilities, and potential that deserve to be explored and nurtured.
Ali's philosophy does not center on finding one perfect teaching method. Instead, it emphasizes understanding the individual child and recognizing that meaningful learning can happen in many different ways.
Why Homeschool4Everyone?
Ali sees homeschooling as an opportunity for families to approach education with greater flexibility, creativity, and respect for each child's individuality.
Rather than recreating a traditional classroom at home, parents can provide opportunities for learning through everyday experiences, conversations, reading, play, investigation, hands-on projects, and exploration of their children's interests.
Curriculum can be a valuable resource, but it need not define or limit a child's entire educational experience.
Through Homeschool4Everyone, Ali shares her experience and knowledge to help parents navigate educational choices, discover resources, and develop approaches that reflect their children's needs and their family's circumstances.
Whether parents are just beginning their homeschooling journey, reconsidering their curriculum choices, or seeking ways to support a child who is struggling, Ali offers individualized guidance informed by decades of professional experience and a lifelong commitment to learning.
Her goal is not to tell families there is only one right way to educate their children, but to help them develop the confidence to make thoughtful, informed decisions.
Because every child deserves the opportunity to learn, explore, and grow as an individual.
